All of the coffee co-operatives we partner with focus on improving gender equality, and within their programs a small number of them promote coffee lots which have been produced solely by women from within their organisations. We’re into our ninth year of partnering with the ASOBAGRI co-operative, which is located in the region of Guatemala which sees the highest number of worker migrants per capita within the country – mostly men - departing to the United States in search of better income opportunities. Partly in response to this situation, ASOBAGRI has established its Cafe con Manos de Mujer (womens' coffee) program, which offers additional support to women within its membership who are farming alone because they are widowed, or single, or wives of men who have left to live in the US. This short video clip shares a little of the story of Sebastiana Martinez Gomez, who in the wake of losing her husband is benefitting from ASOBAGRI’s womens’ program (video courtesy of Royal Coffee).
